Graduate Reception & Graduation Ceremony Instructions
RSVP In order to accurately plan for the ceremony and reception, please be sure to submit your RSVP no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, November 27, 2023.
CAPS AND GOWNS Caps and gowns are required for participation in the VCU Commencement Exercises and the School of Education Graduation Ceremony. Graduates will need to purchase their academic regalia prior to Commencement day. If you were unable to attend the Grad Fair, regalia will be available for purchase at the Barnes & Noble @ VCU on the Monroe Park and MCV campuses. If you are unable to visit Barnes & Noble, please order your regalia online at balfour.com/vcu. Shipping charges will apply to all online orders. Regalia prices, including cap, gown, hood and tassel, are: bachelor set, $63.94; master set, $81.94; and Ph.D./Ed.D., set $120.92. (Note: sales tax is not included in these prices.)
UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT Commencement exercises will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 10 a.m. in the E.J. Wade Arena at the Stuart C. Siegel Center, 1200 West Broad Street. Candidates should plan to arrive at the Siegel Center by 9 a.m. The Siegel Center doors will be opened for guests at 9 a.m. Please use the Harrison Street entrance. Candidates should follow the signs to their school assembly areas where faculty marshals will provide further instructions. Free parking will be available in the VCU parking decks located at 1111 W. Broad Street and 609 Bowe Street. For maps and directions, please visit maps.vcu.edu/monroepark/siegelcenter. SCHOOL OF EDUCATION GRADUATION CEREMONY The School of Education Graduation Ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. at the Greater Richmond Convention Center (403 N. 3rd St.). From the Siegel Center, travel east on Broad Street for several blocks and turn left on 3rd street; the parking deck is on the right. There is a $7 fee for parking in the Convention Center deck. Enter the Convention Center from the third level of the parking deck. Free parking is available in the VCU 8th Street Parking Deck at 659 N. 8th Street, located a few blocks from the Convention Center. To reach the 8th Street Parking Deck, continue past the Convention Center parking deck entrance, continue traveling north on 3rd Street and turn right on Jackson Street. Continue east on Jackson and turn left on 8th Street. The VCU Deck is on the right. To get back to the Richmond Center, from the 8th Street deck, go to the corner (8th and Jackson) and turn right on Jackson Street, walk three blocks and turn left on 5th Street. The Convention Center entrance will be on 5th near Marshall Street.
LINE UP AT THE CONVENTION CENTER For the SOE Graduation Ceremony, graduates will assemble in the lobby outside of Ballrooms A & B at 12:45 p.m. The processional will begin promptly at 1:30 p.m. Go to the registration table to pick up your name card and line up behind the signs which indicate your degree. You will be assisted by Faculty Marshals who will help you take your place in line. Friends and relatives may begin seating in the Ballrooms at 1:00 p.m.
HONOR GRADUATES: ACADEMIC HONORS ARE AWARDED TO GRADUATES FOR STELLAR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL ONLY. Cum laude is awarded for a 3.30 to 3.59 GPA, magna cum laude is awarded for a 3.60 to 3.89 GPA, and summa cum laude is awarded for 3.90 GPA or better. Academic honors are based on your undergraduate GPA when you complete the graduation application. The Graduation Office notifies School of Education of honor recipients. The School of Education will send a letter informing you that you have achieved academic honors. If you would like to wear the cords at graduation, please purchase through the Barnes and Noble @ VCU bookstore, located at 1111 West Broad Street. Students with honor cords will wear them draped around the neck over the gown.
GRADUATES RECEPTION Immediately following the SOE Graduation Ceremony, a Reception for graduates and guests will be held in the lobby adjacent to Ballrooms A & B in the Convention Center.
SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS For the 10 a.m. VCU Commencement Exercises, mobility impaired guests may unload at the Siegel Center UU lot at the corner of Broad and Ryland streets and park on the ground floor of the Bowe Street Parking Deck at 609 Bowe St. Hearing-impaired guests may want to sit in Section 8, where an interpreter can be easily seen. Graduation candidates needing special accommodations should contact Student Accessibility and Educational Opportunity at (804) 828-2253. For the 1:30 p.m. SOE Graduation Ceremony, mobility-impaired guests may use the entrance on the third level of the parking deck. There are several reserved accessible parking spaces available on the third level. If you are being dropped off at the Convention Center, please take the 5th Street entrance and take the elevator to the second floor. Follow the signs to Ballrooms A and B. If special accommodations are needed for the SOE Graduation Ceremony or the Reception for Graduates, please contact Danielle Cosby in the Dean’s Office at (804) 828-1309.
DIPLOMAS Diplomas for December graduates will be mailed starting in late January. Diplomas for August 2023 graduates are currently being mailed.
GUESTS Due to time constraints, please do not try to meet your guests between the VCU Commencement Exercises and the SOE Graduation Ceremony. Instead, arrange to meet your friends and family after the SOE Graduation Ceremony.
SAFETY For your safety, please be advised that alcoholic beverages, wrapped gifts, balloons, and/or flammable items are strictly prohibited. Persons carrying such items will not be admitted to the ceremony. Please turn off cell phones prior to the ceremonies. To maintain the dignity of the ceremony, security officers may confiscate such items that interfere with the programs. We want you to enjoy the festivities, and we expect everyone to comply with these policies for the safety of all of our guests.
PHOTOGRAPHS During the ceremony, a photograph will be taken of you as you receive your degree and a portrait will be taken once you exit the stage. You will be contacted directly with information about purchasing pictures. The School of Education takes great pride in recognizing its graduates at both ceremonies on December 9 and we hope you will participate.
