Social foundations of education, including issues of social justice and equality in education — specifically the roles of race, gender, and social class in shaping schools and institutions of higher learning
Dr. Maike Philipsen serves as a professor in the School of Education’s Department of Foundations of Education. Her publications focus on equal opportunities at both the K-12 and college/university levels, employing primarily a sociological perspective and qualitative methodologies. She has authored four books, the most recent ones analyzing the challenges of the faculty career for women (Jossey-Bass 2008), faculty work-life balance (Jossey-Bass, 2010) and social foundations issues in education (Continuum, 2011). She has presented on social foundations topics for more than two decades, most recently on faculty work-life balance.
Philipsen has taught students in all School of Education programs and at all levels, ranging from undergraduate to doctoral students She is actively involved in the school’s Ph.D. programs as well as the university’s Preparing Future Faculty program. Her service activities support her department, school, university and the local community.
Philipsen has assumed leadership roles in professional organizations at the local, state, regional and national level, including the American Educational Studies Association, the Society for Educating Women and the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society.
