Doctoral student wins international award
The VCU School of Education’s Katie Brendli, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in Education, Concentration in Special Education and Disability Leadership, was presented with the Division of International Special Education & Services (DISES) Distinguished Student Leadership/Service Award recently at the Council for Exceptional Children's (CEC) 2020 Convention & Expo in Portland, Oregon.
The award recognizes a student leader who has demonstrated excellent academic achievement and a strong potential to contribute to the international field of education and to individuals with disabilities. Since 2017, Brendli has taught literacy to children with disabilities in the Dominican Republic, volunteered for multiple SOE programs with Shanghai Normal University's School of Education, and presented research at the First Sino-American Conference in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China last year.
The CEC is a professional association of educators dedicated to advancing the success of children with exceptionalities. DISES, a division of the CEC, promotes knowledge exchange, collaboration, human rights and advocacy for those who provide services for individuals with disabilities.
