SOE to begin offering minor in education this fall
The VCU School of Education will begin offering a new Minor in Education in the Fall 2020 semester, providing undergraduates the opportunity to learn more about the teaching profession.
“Education is such a key foundation of society, and our new minor provides our future educators an excellent way to see if this growing profession is a good fit for them,” said Dean Andrew Daire, Ph.D.
Dr. Valerie Robnolt, associate professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, said that undergraduates across disciplines may find education to be an attractive employment option.
“Students in high demand career areas such as STEM and foreign languages may find teaching to be a meaningful outlet for their unique skills and passions. Our new Minor in Education will be a perfect fit for them,” Robnolt said.
The Minor in Education will also appeal to undeclared students and students across disciplines since it includes courses that engage all students in critical conversations about one of the important building blocks of our society: education.
Courses for the new Minor in Education will cover topics such as the relationship between an increasingly diverse society and education, the nature of learning and learning theories, classroom management, how to plan and create positive learning environments, and how to apply reading skills into areas of instruction.
Unlike SOE’s other undergraduate programs, the Minor in Education will not lead to licensure.
