Evandra Catherine is a Ph.D. in Education candidate in the special education and disability leadership concentration. The Holmes Scholars® Program supports underrepresented doctoral students from diverse backgrounds who are pursuing careers in education.

Congratulations to Evandra Catherine, Holmes Scholar of the Month for December 2018!

Catherine is an active member of the Holmes Community where she has attended and actively contributed to a number of Holmes conferences and retreats. Catherine is a doctoral student at Virginia Commonwealth University whose research interests include emotion socialization of preschool-aged Black boys, preschool teachers' emotion socialization behaviors, preschool exclusionary discipline policy and professional development on emotional competence for preschool teachers.

Catherine has presented at several conferences and forums with her most recent presentations highlighting emotion socialization of Black boys. She has presented at the Metropolitan Educational Research Consortium in Richmond (VA), Black Doctoral Network Conference in Charlotte (NC), and the Council for Exceptional Children's Teacher Education Division in Las Vegas (NV).

She recently passed her dissertation proposal defense; her topic is “Examining Teachers' Responses to Black Boy's Emotion Expressions.”
