The VCU School of Education welcomes Kristen M. Brown, Ed.D., as an associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership.
Brown has served as a project consultant in the Office of Strategic Engagement (OSE) for the past year. Her time will now be evenly split between that position and her new associate professor role. As associate professor, she will be teaching undergraduate and graduate courses on education equity, leadership, social justice, diversity and inclusion.
Brown has over a decade of experience in educational equity serving Black and Brown students. She served in District of Columbia Public Schools as a teacher and in the Office of Equity where she was deeply committed to equity work on the Student Empowerment and Equity Programs (SEEP) team. Most recently, she was the mentor and equity specialist at Richmond Public Schools where she led the mentoring program titled Mentor RPS and is building out strategies for equity and implicit bias training for the RPS Office of Engagement.
Over the past year, Brown has worked with OSE’s Becoming an Antiracist Educator Series where she facilitated sessions for educators unpacking implicit bias, power, privilege and cultural competency in education spaces. Currently in OSE, she is working with professors on developing the Career Switcher Program. She has also taught graduate level courses in the Department of Educational Leadership as an adjunct professor.
