The Partnership for People with Disabilities, a center affiliated with the VCU School of Education, is featured as a leader in diversity, equity and inclusion in an article on the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) website.

The article, Using Cultural Brokers to Build Bridges and Increase Access to Services, traces the development of the Partnership’s cultural brokerage program and its use of parent-to-parent support. A cultural broker is someone who helps to build a bridge between groups or people from different cultural backgrounds.

Today, the Partnership maintains at least six cultural brokers in its Center for Family Involvement program led by Dana V. Yarbrough. The cultural brokers in the center provide support based on years of research and experience, and educate their communities about disability.

The article concludes with seven recommendations from the Partnership that may help other University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs) start their own cultural brokerage initiative.
