Teaching Young Multilingual Learners: Key Issues and New Insights is available as a free download via Cambridge University Press through February 3.

The book, also available for purchase, provides an overview of research focusing on language teaching practices for young, multilingual learners in primary classrooms in English-speaking contexts.

Co-authors Dr. Luciana de Oliveira with Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education and Dr. Loren Jones from the University of Maryland use culturally sustaining teaching practices to provide actionable examples from pedagogy-informed research studies.

“This book provides updated resources and pedagogies for educators supporting young multilingual learners at various English language proficiency levels in the classroom,” said Dr. de Oliveira.

Dr. de Oliveira is also the author of Supporting Multilingual Learners’ Academic Language Development: A Language-Based Approach to Content Instruction, in press (2023) with Routledge. This book provides elementary school teachers with everything they need to know to successfully teach grade-level content to multilingual learners. Chapters are organized by subject, addressing the specific language demands of teaching English language arts, social studies, mathematics, and science. Each chapter features examples of implementation in grades K-5, practical strategies, and a wealth of tables, figures, and resources.
