About Our Lab
At STAR Labs, our mission is to conduct socially transformative applied research that enhances the well-being and flourishing of historically underserved and marginalized communities.
STAR Labs is a transdisciplinary research hub dedicated to enhancing community well-being through innovative, applied research. Utilizing a unique blend of community health sciences, living systems theory, and Positive Psychology 3.0, we focus on fostering flourishing and thriving in diverse communities.
Our research projects explore a range of impactful topics, including the use of contemplative practices and mindfulness as mental health interventions, the study of mental health disparities, and the development of tools to promote prosocial behaviors. Recent initiatives include:
- The Confianza Project
- Partnering with Dr. Nicole Silverio from the University of South Carolina, we aim to enhance mental health help-seeking behaviors by building confianza and reducing stigma.

- Spirituality and Transpersonal Research Lab
- We examine spirituality and transcendent emotional states to identify their influence on mental health and psychological/emotional healing. Some examples of our studies include the exploration of hope as a mediating factor in addiction recovery, the development of spiritual and religious competence in mental health counseling, the influence of non-dual awareness on mental health and well-being, and meaning in life as a factor in wellness.

- Transcending Trauma Lab
- Our previous work has examined the reconciliation process post-genocide in Rwanda and the vicarious trauma experienced by counter-terrorism practitioners in the United States. Currently, we are investigating post-traumatic growth and the factors associated with thriving post a traumatic experience.
