In memoriam: Dr. Gary Sarkozi
Gary Sarkozi, Ph.D., a beloved member of the VCU School of Education family, died January 10, 2021. He was the director of technology and an assistant professor in the school from 2004 to 2015, and he was instrumental in developing both instructional technology programs and infrastructure in the school.
As director of technology, Sarkozi was responsible for writing and implementing technology polices and technologies used for communication, database management, enrollment, degree processing, productivity and instruction. He was also the lead on all technology training initiatives for faculty, including face-to-face and remote course design and material development.
Sarkozi earned his bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin College, his master’s degree from the University of Virginia, and Ph.D. in Education from VCU, with an emphasis on business management.
Those who knew and worked with Sarkozi remember him as someone who was always quick with a joke, had an infectious laugh that came easily and often, and was a joy to be around and learn from. He also loved teaching and working with students.
Monty Jones, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, remembered Sarkozi as an expert in his field who was always more than willing to share his expertise.
“He was an early mentor of mine in the field of instructional technology, who gave freely of his time to provide advice, and he never hesitated to help when I asked,” said Jones. “I cherished hanging out with him in Oliver Hall and later in his home in Clarksville, Virginia. He was a wonderful professor, advisor, mentor, colleague and most importantly, friend. He will be deeply missed.”
