Inspiration?

Karsyn Boyer made a successful transition from Virginia Tech to the VCU School of Education’s M.Ed. in Counselor Education program. She said that her undergraduate background in human development proved useful.

“My love for working with children inspired me to choose this field,” Boyer said. “When I was younger, I had some tough experiences in school. My counselor helped me learn to draw on my strengths to get through those difficult situations. I want to be in a position where I can advocate for students and unconditionally encourage them during these times.”

The M.Ed in Counselor Education program provides students with specialized knowledge and skill needed for any placement. The program pushes students beyond their boundaries and allows them to reach new heights and success.

Why VCU?

Boyer said that she’s always heard positive things about SOE’s Counselor Education program.

“There’s a wide range of counselor educators in the program who share their knowledge and expertise with all of us as we train to be a counselor,” she said. “The difference is that the staff at VCU genuinely care about your well-being. I knew this would be a good fit, and that I would have their support throughout my time in the program.”

Boyer was also impressed with the program’s accreditation.

“One factor that influenced my decision to attend SOE is that SOE’s program is accredited by CACREP, which indicates a thorough counseling program that will fully prepare me to enter the school counseling profession,” she said.

Boyer said that diversity is one of the premier strengths of the SOE program.

“VCU and SOE support me in my career goals through their emphasis on diversity. I want to be prepared to be a school counselor in any and all schools, and the program and opportunities offered here will give me the tools I need to do that,” she said.

How were you supported through your transition?

The unforgettable experience gained through SOE’s Counselor Education program not only prepares students, but creates new bonds and relationships that last a lifetime. Karsyn is one of many students who have been able to benefit from these connections to gain a real competitive advantage on her academic and career journey.

“Doctoral students have helped teach the courses I’ve taken so far, which has allowed me to hear experiences from people who used to be in my shoes and are now in the real world,” she said.

What would you change and why?

“So far, there is honestly nothing I would change!” she said. “I enjoy how I’ve been able to make connections with other members of the program, and how responsive the professors are. With the challenges of distance learning, I’m looking forward to the day when we all get to meet in person.”

SOE is dedicated to creating a positive, uplifting and safe environment for all of our students. We want to ensure every transition is comfortable and productive for each student.
