Morgan Hanley: ‘Help each child find their passion’

Freshman wants to follow in her mentors’ footsteps

Morgan Hanley, a freshman in the B.S.Ed. in Health and Physical Education program.
Morgan Hanley (9) is a freshman majoring in health and physical education.

Morgan Hanley was born in Elmira, Ontario, Canada, where she grew up competing in ice hockey, badminton, curling and gymnastics. By the time she was in high school, she had found her passion in field hockey. Inspired first by a family friend who became an educator – and later by her high school teachers and coaches – Morgan dreamed of becoming a teacher herself. She is currently a freshman at the VCU School of Education pursuing a B.S.Ed. in Health and Physical Education degree.

What drew you to the field of education?

For as long as I can remember, my dream job has been to be a teacher. Being a teacher means you get to be the rock in a child's life. It also means you get to fuel them with passion and excitement. I want to help each child find their passion and pursue it!

Is there anyone who inspired you to study in this field?

I have a family friend who played varsity field hockey in college, and then became an educator. She shares her passion each day with her students and pushes them to reach their potential. My two high school gym teachers and field hockey coaches also convinced me that teaching was what I wanted to do. They both supported me and made me feel appreciated each day. All of these women have been good role models for me, showing me the impact a good teacher can have.

Why VCU SOE?

I chose VCU for the amazing field hockey program and fantastic coaching staff. I originally came in as an exercise science major. Once I heard about the new physical education major, I quickly made the decision to switch! VCU has already offered me so many amazing experiences and opportunities in my first year. I love the classes that are in my major and the fact that I get so much practical experience teaching in schools.

"I love that I get to assist a teacher with so much experience while also learning how students learn best."

What impressed you the most about the program during your first semester?

My favorite part has been getting practical teaching experience in Richmond Public Schools. I have never heard of another school of education that gives freshman students this important experience! I love that I get to assist a teacher with so much experience while also learning how students learn best.

What would be your dream job?

My dream job is to be a high school gym and science teacher. I want to work with high schoolers so I can be a mentor to them like my gym teachers were for me. I want to help them find their path in life and navigate through the rough waters of high school. Plus, working with this age group would also allow me to coach varsity sports.

Any tips for students who are considering coming to VCU SOE for the B.S.Ed. in Health & Physical Education?

Take every opportunity that is given to you! There are so many amazing classes you will get to take, and you will also get to experience working in public schools. Remember that not every education student gets these opportunities! Also, you will be learning from some very passionate and experienced professors. Ask them lots of questions and learn from their experiences. Most of all, enjoy it!
