Background
I have tutored middle and high school students in math and science for about 10 years. Additionally, I worked in nutrition education in the Blacksburg area public schools during my time as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech.
Why do you want to teach?
I believe that teaching is the most rewarding career choice for me. I have always enjoyed the field of education and love the idea of being able to teach science and work with students to inspire an interest in it as a career.
Please tell us about a memorable teaching experience and why it stands out in your mind.
I really enjoyed working with students in Montgomery County regarding personal health and nutrition. Certain areas of the county are considered food deserts [areas where it is difficult to buy affordable or good-quality fresh food], and many of those students came from low-income homes and had little knowledge of personal nutrition and exercise. Teaching them about these subjects was incredibly rewarding.
What has the Noyce program meant to you?
The Noyce program is an incredible opportunity for those of us going into secondary STEM education. The support that I have received from my peers and instructors in the program has been incredible and has made me feel much more prepared for my teaching career.
