Currently I am completing my M.Ed with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction.

Background

I am from Chesterfield, Va., born to two Trinidadian parents. Last year I began my journey into the world of education working with VCU AmeriCorps (a national community service program) and Blue Sky Fund (local nonprofit). The experience allowed me to serve 2nd and 3rd graders in the east end of Richmond. I loved it so much I decided to apply to the Richmond Teacher Residency program, an urban graduate teacher residency right here in Richmond,VA. With my combined experiences I hope to become a teacher of record in RPS.

Why do you want to teach?

Science has always been a fascinated me. This response seems a little cliche, but I’m sticking to it. Science requires action, it is a process of investigation in an effort to solve life’s mysteries. It is beautiful, frustrating, and should always be done with goggles, closed toed shoes, and an open mind. I want to share this realization with young minds in hopes of spreading the joys of science to as many people as I can. Even if my students walk away with no interest in studying science, I do want them walk away with a new perspective on our tiny little world, in a tiny little corner, of our very big universe.

Please tell us about a memorable teaching experience and why it stands out in your mind.

Last year I had the fortunate opportunity to work with a local non-profit called Blue Sky Fund. They focus on outdoor experiential science education and provide these experiences to grade school kids throughout the east end of Richmond. On one of our trips we introduced students to magnetism and the joys of playing with magnets. I had a great time exploring magnetism with the kids. Their faces would light up every time the magnets seem to exude almost magical properties. Watching the kids begin to form questions and inquire about what was happening. I’m reminded of that moment every time i walk by my fridge.

What has the Noyce program meant to you?

To me it has been an honor. To know that I have the support of others behind me represents a sense of gratitude. I am thankful to the NOYCE program.
