Tara Powell - 722x960-96Program

I am in the Master's of Education program for Curriculum and Instruction, with the content area of Middle School Science.

Background

I have never taught before, other than some tutoring. After graduating from VCU in 2015 with a B.S. in electrical engineering, I began working for the Navy as a systems engineer. After working for three years, I decided to take the leap and begin a career in teaching!

Why do you want to teach?

After my first job, I realized how important it is to feel internally motivated in your field of work. I have always felt a strong passion for combating social issues and injustices in our society. Teaching provides me with the opportunity to come to work every day and know I'm having a meaningful impact on my community. Knowing how important the work is will be a strong motivator for me to do my best and stick with it for the long term. Richmond is an amazing city with a lot of room for growth, and I can't wait to be an active member in its progress.

Please tell us about a memorable teaching experience and why it stands out in your mind.

My overall experience so far teaching in Richmond Public Schools has been more rewarding that I could have imagined. The moments that have stuck with me the most are times where I've felt like a student put trust in me - whether it was telling a personal anecdote or asking a question about the content. Building the relationships with students and being someone they can trust and count on is what I am most excited about.

What has the Noyce program meant to you?

Making this career change was a difficult decision, which I can honestly say I wouldn't have done without the financial support I've received from the Noyce program and RTR. When I complete my year at VCU, I will have minimal debt, ample experience and a master's degree. I really can't express how grateful I am.
