The VCU School of Education's Genevieve Siegel-Hawley, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, is featured in an article in the April 28, 2021 issue of The Virginia Mercury on a new report which found that Black high school students in Virginia are sharply underrepresented in Advanced Placement courses even when they’re not low-income — and even when they attend advantaged, largely homogeneous schools.

Siegel-Hawley is the lead researcher of the report, which is co-authored by Kimberly Bridges, Ed.L.D., assistant professor in the Department of Educational Leadership, and researchers from Penn State’s Center for Education and Civil Rights. The article features numerous quotes from Siegel-Hawley and a link to the April 2021 report titled “Double Segregation by Race and Poverty in Virginia Schools.”

The Virginia Mercury is an independent, nonprofit online news organization covering state government and policy.
