Lectureships
Each year, the School of Education hosts two lectureships: the John and Mary Sue Oehler Lecture for Educational Leadership and the Ruth Harris Lecture in Dyslexia Studies.
Created in honor of Dr. John S. Oehler, who served as dean of the School of Education from 1985-2002, the John and Mary Sue Oehler Lecture for Educational Leadership brings internationally-renowned speakers to campus to provide their expertise on key issues in education.
Open to all VCU faculty, staff and students as well as the general public, previous lectures have featured keynote addresses from James Ryan, J.D., dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education; Dr. Peter Smagorinsky, a professor of language and literacy education at the University of Georgia; and the dean of William & Mary’s School of Education, Dr. Virginia L. McLaughlin.

Always an anticipated event on the VCU School of Education calendar, the Ruth Harris Lecture in Dyslexia Studies brings prominent researchers and scholars to campus to discuss their work on — and often first-hand experience with — learning disabilities such as dyslexia.
First held in 2011, the Harris Lecture is made possible thanks to a gift from Ruth and Louis Harris. Previous presenters include Dr. Kenneth Pugh, the president and a senior scientist at Haskins Laboratories; famed paleontologist Jack Horner; Anne Ford, the great-granddaughter of Ford Motor Company founder Henry Ford; and Candace Cortiella, founder and director of The Advocacy Institute.
